Frelimo calls protesters "distracted and greedy" and says it won elections on merit

Frelimo chama manifestantes de “distraídos e gananciosos” e diz que ganhou eleições por mérito

Frelimo, Mozambique's ruling party, on Wednesday (06) called the citizens who are taking to the streets to contest the election results and the precarious living and security conditions in the country "distracted and greedy".

In a publication by Letter from MozambiqueAlcinda De Abreu, a member of Frelimo's Political Commission, said after the end of the 36th Ordinary Session of the ruling party's Political Commission, that the demonstrators are being used by foreign forces, who intend to exploit natural resources, thus ignoring the evidence of electoral fraud, as well as the misery and hardship to which the majority of Mozambicans are subjected.

"Mozambique is a country rich in its subsoil, it has resources that some countries covet and, as such, they recruit distracted, greedy Mozambicans to cause instability so that, in the end, they can take advantage of what nature has destined for us, as Mozambicans," said Alcinda De Abreu.

For the former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mozambicans should think about the reasons why Mozambique, since independence, has been plunged into war whenever it tries to rise up. In the analysis of Frelimo's Political Commission, the ruling party is part of the African national liberation movements that are today being removed from power "because there are countries that never accepted our national independence, they wanted us to continue under foreign domination".

In the same publication, Alcinda De Abreu emphasized that the calls for popular demonstrations are aimed solely at removing Filipe Nyusi and Frelimo from power.

"We are witnessing calls for violence, insubordination, general insurrection and, finally, an attempted coup d'état. When people are incited to occupy the Ponta Vermelha Palace [in reference to the march on Maputo city], this is an attempt to assault power, a power that has been democratically instituted, legally legitimized," he stressed.

De Abreu appealed for patriotism, stressing that Frelimo and its presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo, won the October 9 elections because "the voters went to the polls and expressed their will by choosing Frelimo and its candidate to run the country for the next five years".

"There are voices that oppose our victory and I ask: why? Who hasn't followed the hard work of Frelimo members and leaders throughout the country, inside and outside Mozambique, during the 43 days of the electoral campaign? (...) Who hasn't seen our candidate working in all the provinces, in various districts and abroad, speaking, dialoguing, recording the ideas, proposals and contributions of various layers of young people, women and men from the various sectors and vectors of our society, in a movement that the people themselves called 'Chapo Chapo'?" he asked.

"The victory of Frelimo and comrade Daniel Chapo is the result of the vote of more than four million Frelimo members. As well as members, we also have sympathizers, who sympathize with Frelimo's ideals of total and complete independence from Mozambique," added De Abreu.
