According to WFP director David Beaasley, the increase in world hunger is explained by several reasons, including conflict, climate change, high fuel, fertilizer, and seed prices.
According to Beaasley, in Afghanistan for example, 23 million people are receiving food assistance from WFP. A similar situation also exists in Somalia, Angola, Haiti, Yemen, and Syria.
Food insecurity has caused many people to eat less, skip some meals altogether, or choose to feed children instead of adults. WFP also cites extreme cases where families end up having to eat grasshoppers, wild leaves, or even cacti to survive, as is the case in Madagascar. In this country it is estimated that about 30,000 people are suffering from hunger due to the effects of climate change.
In other areas, families end up taking children out of school, selling the livestock they have, or are forced to marry the children off. Food prices are at a 10-year high this month, and the increase in fuel prices is further aggravating the situation.
Following the numbers, if a year ago it cost a thousand dollars to ship a container, now the figure reaches 4 thousand dollars. WFP estimates that to reverse the world's hunger situation, $7 billion is now needed. David Beasley stated that "the cost of humanitarian assistance is rising exponentially" and so "more money is needed for the agency to be able to help families around the world who have already exhausted their capacity to cope with extreme hunger."
