Famine threatens close to 29,000 families, in the district of Búzi, in Sofala, and food assistance is already being considered for those affected.
The situation is the result of floods and pests that devastated extensive areas of cultivation in the last agricultural campaign, according to the administrator of Búzi, João Saize.
"Unfortunately we had the flood phenomenon, that came to nullify the great performance of our population. From the food security point of view we are not well, first, we have been assisted by some non-governmental organizations like WFP, among others, but we feel that there is some need for us to have some reinforcement because some communities, unfortunately, need it despite so much effort they have made," he said.
