Financial rating agency Fitch Ratings warns that security threats and political instability could still pose risks to the resumption of the TotalEnergies LNG project along the Rovuma basin in Cabo Delgado, foreseeing uncertainties about the continuity of the Rwandan force in northern Mozambique..
"Notably, our assumption that a Rwandan force, in place since 2021, will continue to support security in the area around the development is subject to uncertainty," says Fitch Ratings, in an analysis to which the MZNews had access to.
According to this financial rating agency, European Union (EU) funding for the presence of the Rwandan force is being affected by political controversies over the involvement of the Rwandan force in the armed conflict in the DRC.
"For example, the EU has imposed restrictions on some members of the Rwandan Defense Force for alleged involvement in armed conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Further internal political and social unrest in Mozambique could also slow down the project's progress," explains the agency.
In the same document, Fitch believes that TotalEnergies' Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) project in Mozambique will go ahead this year, after Exim Bank approved financing of 4.7 billion dollars.
