The president of the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) party, Filipe Nyusi, was unanimously re-elected to the highest office of the political group, in the ballot in which he was the only candidate to succeed him. The vote was held today in the city of Matola, during the party's 12th Congress.
Data in our possession indicate that all 1,345 delegates involved in the process voted for Nyusi to remain as president of the largest political party in Mozambique.
However, remember that MZNews, last week, quoted the Secretary General of Frelimo, Roque Silva, who anticipated Nyusi's victory because he was the only candidate to succeed him. But we also know that this was being prepared long before the moment of the vote. As if confirming this victory, on Friday last week, when the Congress began, the Secretary of the Organization of Mozambican Youth (OJM) - the party's youth wing - Silva Livone, quoted by a newspaper, reportedly said that Nyusi's re-election would represent ""respect, recognition and gratitude for the party's victories" in recent years.
After his re-election was confirmed, Nyusi was sworn in tonight, and in his speech he thanked the party militants for the vote of confidence they had given him and promised to work harder to consolidate national unity.
During Nyusi's investiture, the former President of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano pointed out that this was a landmark moment for Frelimo because it was the first time a candidate was elected with all the votes.
