Last year, the Mozambican state lost around 80 million meticais due to the tax authorities' delay in forwarding fines to the Police Court. On average, the country loses around 60 million meticais every year.
According to the presiding judge of the Police Court, Romana Muhôma, most of the cases that come before the Police Court are already time-barred.
On average, 30,000 cases are closed each year, compared to almost 6,000 judged and sentenced.
"The number of cases closed by order each year is always high because there is a lot of untimely filing," said Muhôma as quoted by News.
On the other hand, the growing number of lawsuits is due to the emergence of various activities in different sectors, as well as negligence and ignorance of the law.
The Police Court is responsible, among other things, for judging offenses that result in a fine, such as violations of the Highway Code, misuse of public spaces and transgressions in the commercial sector.
