Two Israeli doctors from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Zvika Granot and Amnon Lahad, said this week that while Omicron is worrisome, it is not "a health disaster" and could be the end of the pandemic.
Both experts say that "a post-pandemic state will be near, in which we will live with the coronavirus as we live with the various variants of influenza and other viruses.
"Generally, viruses that are very aggressive are not very contagious, and viruses that are very contagious [as is the case with the Omicron variant] are not very aggressive," explains Zvika Granot, quoted by Notícias ao Minuto.
Amnon Lahad, director of the Department of General Medicine at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, explains that a pandemic end implies a variant that is highly transmissible but with few symptoms, and this is what is happening with the Omicron variant, initially detected in South Africa.
"If you look in detail, you see that the PCR tests show more positive cases, but we don't see an increase in severe cases, instead we see a decrease or stability," he explains.
"Many people will get it, but they will get a runny nose and maybe a fever for a few days, and then go on with their normal lives. When this kind of situation occurs, the vast majority get infected and get over it, developing a true group immunity," Granot detailed adding that "from this point of view, it is possible that Omicron is the light at the end of the tunnel."
In Israel, it is already being considered to bet on a mass contagion since Omicron is less severe.
