More than 2,500 kilometers of national and regional roads have been affected by the rains in the country. Of these, at least 150 kilometers have been damaged.
The list of damages includes the dragging of 25 aqueducts, the destruction of eight bridges, four drifts, six pontoons, drainage systems and pontoons, which has affected the movement of people and goods, according to "O Noticias".
Quoted by the newspaper, Rubina Noormahomed, director of the Central Services for Road Maintenance and Safety at the National Roads Administration (ANE), said that work was underway to ensure that the affected roads were made passable as soon as possible.
He said that in places where there are road cuts, detours have been created to allow vehicles to circulate.
"At the moment there is no general and definitive quantification of the damage, as we are still in the rainy season; this will only happen at the end of March, which will also allow us to budget for the repair work," said Noormahomed.
Tete province has the longest road network affected by the rain, totaling 971 kilometers, in addition to two bridges destroyed.
Zambezia province has 514 kilometers, three bridges destroyed, five pontoons, two drifts and fifteen aqueducts, while Nampula has 490 kilometers affected, in addition to three bridges, a pontoon, a drift and eight aqueducts.
Sofala and Maputo are the least affected provinces, with no major damage reported so far due to the rain.
Repairing the damage identified so far in all the provinces could cost more than 400 million euros, which is well above ANE's annual budget to finance routine, periodic, emergency and signaling maintenance works.
In Maputo province, the Catuane-Filipe section is currently impassable, with flooding in downtown Madubula; Gaza, specifically the Pafúri-Mapai; Chicualacula-Pafúri; Mohambe-Maqueze roads.
In the center, in Tete, the Daca-Furancungo section is impassable; in Zambézia, the Milange/Chire-Sede and Dere-Mepinha routes, while in Nampula, the Angoche-Liupo route stands out.
Most of the affected roads are restricted to vehicles, at a time when the contractors hired by ANE in each province have been carrying out emergency work to minimize the impact of the rain. (News)
