US ambassador pledges support in crucial areas

Embaixador dos EUA garante apoio em áreas cruciais

The ambassador of the United States of America (USA) to Mozambique, Peter Vrooman, guaranteed yesterday in Maputo that his country will continue to support the Mozambican state in crucial areas.

Vrooman gave his assurances during a courtesy meeting with Finance Minister Carla Loveira.

The ambassador reviewed the different sources of direct and indirect support from the US government to Mozambique, with emphasis on the Global Fund; the United States Agency for International Development (USAID); the World Food Program (WFP); the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR); and all the humanitarian aid provided to the country, stressing that some of this funding is still on standby due to a recent decision by the US President.

The Finance Minister also welcomed the historic support of the American government and noted that the current situation of suspension of funding creates imbalances in the proposed Social Economic Plan and State Budget (PESOE) 2025, while demanding additional fiscal effort from the Mozambican government.

The minister also met the Spanish ambassador to Mozambique, Teresa Orjales, who sent Loveira congratulatory messages on her appointment to the post and showed her country's openness to continuing to support Mozambique in its development policies.

Orjales took the opportunity to exchange views on the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development, which will take place in Seville, Spain, from June 30 to July 3, 2025.

The conference will be an opportunity to accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, it will also support the reform of the international financial architecture, it will also define the global financing agenda and advance the sustainable development goals, he said.

Carla Loveira welcomed the Spanish government's openness in continuing to support the country and the invitation to Mozambique to take part in the Conference, given that the country is a signatory to the 2030 Agenda and has been participating in the reform of the international financial architecture.
