It's another soap opera that seems far from over. After Venâncio Mondlane publicly revealed his candidacy for the presidency of Renamo, another candidate has emerged: Elias Dhlakama.
The brother of former leader Afonso Dhlakama assumes that he will be a candidate for the leadership of this political force, assuring that he has the support of his co-religionists and is not afraid of internal disputes with "media" figures.
In an interview published by DW, Afonso Dhlakama's brother talks about his plans to "resurrect" Renamo if he is elected.
According to Elias Dhlakama, the mandate of the current leader, Ossufo Momade, expires today, January 17, and the expectation is that the party will soon set dates to elect a new leader and future presidential candidate for next October.
Meanwhile, Elias Dhlakama says he is not afraid of the internal Renamo dispute and has confidence in his CV. "I meet very well. I have the contact of the grassroots, I have the support of the grassroots and of the senior members of Renamo," assures the source, adding that: "we know and it's in the public domain that the mandate of the party bodies ends on the 17th, it becomes invalid, they will be out of time, that's why there is a need, first of all, to convene the National Political Commission, which will prepare the decisions."
He continued: "We need to take stock of the municipal elections, where Renamo lost. We lost because, in fact, those who score win. If we don't score, we've lost. We know that we won and we were robbed, we were just given insignificant municipalities as a way of silencing Renamo. So this case should be debated in the National Council."
