General Elections 2024: Chapo calls for restraint of emotion when announcing election results

Eleições Gerais 2024: Chapo apela à contenção de emoções quanto à divulgação de resultados eleitorais

Last week, presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane claimed victory in the general elections held on October 9. He boasted of the results from his parallel counting center, which until then had only calculated data from around 25% polling stations.

The statement by the independent candidate, supported by the Podemos party, anticipated the official information. Not even the District Electoral Commissions had begun to release preliminary results. Nor did he present the original notices that would legitimize his conclusions.

On Friday, the presidential candidate of the Frelimo party, Daniel Chapo, was questioned by journalists about the pronouncements of his main opponent:

"Like that game that ended, it was the refereeing team and the fourth official who guaranteed the end of the game and the result. And we believe that this model is in the law. So we're waiting for the electoral bodies to announce the results."

Chapo assured Mozambicans that only the electoral administration bodies have the power to announce the results.

"Our appeal is for all Mozambicans to be calm and serene and wait for the results to be announced by the electoral bodies, in accordance with the law," he said.

Chapo was speaking after witnessing the draw between the national soccer team and eSuatini at the Zimpeto stadium.
