Thousands of supporters of Mozambique's ruling party marched today on the outskirts of Maputo to "clarify" that "Frelimo is still in fashion", considering that the political force won the October 11 election.
Frelimo's march comes at a time when the opposition continues to contest the results so far, claiming that there have been several irregularities throughout the electoral process.
"Frelimo is a party of the vanguard and we are here, as young people, to say that we won," explained Francisco Raso, quoted by Lusa, in the midst of thousands of supporters who took to the avenue of the Popular Forces of Mozambique to celebrate the victory of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique Frelimo in the local elections on October 11 in the city of Maputo.
The red wave led by the Frelimo candidate in the city, Razaque Manhique, painted the avenue up to Praça dos Combatentes in the early hours of the day and, singing and dancing, the youth of that political force had the ambition to "make it clear that Frelimo is still in fashion", despite the opposition's protests and the annulment by the courts of the elections in some districts of Maputo, including the capital's noble zone.
According to the intermediate tabulation notice presented by the electoral bodies in the Mozambican capital, the Frelimo list, led by Razaque Manhique, received 235,406 votes (58.78%), the Renamo list, led by Venâncio Mondlane, 134,511 votes (33.59%) and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM) list, led by Augusto Mbazo, 24,365 votes (6.8%).
Despite the figures, some district courts in Maputo have already annulled the ballot, alleging various irregularities, most notably the falsification of notices.
"Let the courts do their part, but we know that we've earned very well (...) Frelimo is Mozambique," said Joaquina Jofesse, a party supporter, quoted by Lusa, drawing applause from the group of supporters accompanying her.
The sixth local elections in Mozambique took place in 65 municipalities on October 11, including 12 new municipalities, which went to the polls for the first time.
According to intermediate district and provincial results released by STAE in recent days for 50 municipalities, Frelimo won in 49 and MDM in Beira.
In opposition to the process, Renamo, the main opposition force in the country, has held marches to claim victory in various parts of the country, denouncing an alleged "mega-fraud" in the ballot.
