Local elections: Analysts demand accountability for perpetrators of irregularities acknowledged by Nyusi

Eleições autárquicas: Analistas exigem responsabilização de autores de irregularidades reconhecidas por Nyusi

The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, admitted last week at a meeting with the diplomatic corps accredited to Mozambique that there had been some flaws in the recent municipal elections, justifying them by the fact that this is a country under construction, with a democracy that is still young.

However, for some political analysts it is an unfortunate speech, especially because it does not speak of any accountability.

In a report published by VOZ, analyst Ivan Mausse finds it strange that the acknowledgement of shortcomings was made at a meeting with foreign diplomats and not to the electorate, also stressing that Mozambican democracy is not so young, since "we are already 30 years old".

Sharing the same idea, Dércio Alfazema, a specialist in electoral processes, says that it is not enough to say that there were faults, "the people involved in these irregularities need to be properly held accountable; elections are very expensive, the country has many needs and it makes no sense for irresponsible attitudes to cost the country so much.

In another reading, researcher João Feijó says it is curious that the Mozambican statesman made this speech in front of representatives of the international community who, in his opinion, seem to be interested in Frelimo's continuity in power.

For his part, Renamo's spokesman, opposition leader José Manteigas, believes that the President of the Republic is not honest, because his party and civil society organizations have denounced the irregularities and he has done nothing to restore the electoral truth.
