The state-owned electricity company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) is campaigning to exchange old meters that have expired, with a view to improving the provision of services and modernizing customer service.
According to EDM's Director of Revenue Protection and Loss Control, Edson Augusto Loforte, in this first phase, the campaign, which runs until December, covers consumers in the city and province of Maputo and Tete, with a total of 100,000 customers.
Edson Loforte added that the universal access campaign, which aims to ensure that all Mozambicans have electricity by 2030, is currently underway.
"This technology is not new. Meters have been modernized and today we have this generation that EDM is rolling out in new connections and replacements. In fact, we're replacing them because some have been around for 30 years and have measurement errors. Even the second generation meters will be replaced as they expire," he said.
In addition, the source explained that the advantage of prepayment meters is that customers have control over their consumption. "This equipment gives customers access to their own consumption. Pre-paid meters guarantee the security of both the utility and the customer," he concluded.
