The levels of energy supplied to the country by Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) should increase in the near future with the company's focus on projects to diversify its energy matrix and renewable energy, said Wednesday in Maputo the Chairman of the Board of Directors (PCA) of the company.
The objective is to increase the levels of energy production and guarantee its quality, reliability, and safety.
EDM and its cooperation partners will enable the implementation of the 450MW Temane Thermal Power Plant project, which could provide a more appetizing environment for industrial investments in the country, as well as place Mozambique as a power generation hub in Southern Africa.
"The realization of the Temane initiative translates into the materialization of the first phase of the Tete-Maputo Power Transmission backbone project, which will interconnect the power transmission systems of the south, center and north of the country," said, Marcelino Gildo, during the launching ceremony for the company's 45th anniversary celebrations.
According to the PCA, when on August 27, 1977 EDM inherited the country's electrification services, and at that time only fifteen districts were connected to the national power grid.
In 2018, the company completed the electrification plan for the 154 district headquarters and today is focused on bringing power to all administrative post headquarters by 2024.
"Our goal is universal access to energy for all Mozambicans by 2030, at a time when the national electrification rate is 39 percent, coverage corresponding to only 12 million Mozambicans," he stressed.
