Nampula mayor denounces death threats from Frelimo

Edil de Nampula denuncia ameaças de morte oriundas da Frelimo

The president of the Nampula Municipal Council, Paulo Vahanle, accuses the Frelimo party of sending him death threats. In the mayor's opinion, the Frelimo loyalists want to remove him from the municipality, just as Mahamudo Amurane did, about five years ago.

"Now they are threatening us that they will arrest me and they will kill me. They killed Amurane, but another Macua is here. This problem [of discrimination] of the Macuas with FRELIMO has been going on for a long time," said Vahanle, quoted by DW.

The mayor of Nampula is said to have made these statements publicly, but did not give any details about the accusation. Nevertheless, he addressed messages to Frelimo.

"Stop looking for people to come and destroy us, arrest us and kill us; the ones who created the hidden debts were not the Macuas," he said.

A source from the ruling party, quoted by the portal, dismissed the accusations of death, stressing that the political formation is focused on designing strategies to win the next elections.

Recall that on October 4, 2017, the predecessor of Paulo Vahanle, Mahamudo Amurane was murdered in his business establishment (a pharmacy) in the city of Nampula. The perpetrators of the crime are unknown. A former councilman and a businessman who rehabilitated the private residence of the former municipal president were indicted for the crime.
