The mayor of Maputo, Eneas Comiche, said this week that the time remaining to the end of his mandate would not allow him to make real the project of urban mobility in the region of Greater Maputo.
The World Bank (WB) approved in August a donation of 250 million dollars to support the municipality of Maputo to organize its public transport system, but the president assumed that "this is a major investment that will be beyond my mandate.
Quoted by "O País", he said that despite this, people and cars need to circulate in appropriate spaces dedicated to them.
"There are certainly roads that are going to be widened because under current conditions there is no road dedicated to collective means of transport, but we have to have it," he said.
The amount disbursed by the WB should be applied to the construction of the first bus rapid transport system, called BRT, and facilities associated with the project in the cities of Maputo, Matola and Vila de Marracuene; improved access to low-income neighborhoods through improvements to roads and streets; the construction of infrastructure for non-motorized circulation, as well as facilitating the mobility of vulnerable groups. Part of the project will extend to the district of Boane, according to a note from the WB, consulted by MZNews.
In the WB's intention, the investment will create conditions to boost economic activity among the points covered by the project.
"This project offers an integrated approach to address urban mobility challenges in the Maputo Metropolitan Area and supports the long-term goals of making the metropolitan area more competitive, greener and more resilient," said Fatima Arroyo Arroyo, World Bank Senior Urban Transport Specialist and project team leader.
