US President Donald Trump signed an executive order yesterday on the application of tariffs at a general minimum of 10%, which could be more, in the order of up to 50%, depending on each case.
Essentially, the Trump administration will apply the fees to countries that create barriers with their tariffs for products from the United States of America (USA), as well as on non-monetary trade barriers, such as regulations that make it difficult for American products to enter those markets. He still considers them "gentle measures", considering that they are 50%.
In the case of Mozambique, according to international media reports, US products are subject to a tax of 31%, and with Trump's measure, products of Mozambican origin will be subject to a reciprocal tax of 16%.
"Reciprocal. That means they do it with us, and we do it with them," Trump said after signing the document, and describing the announcement as "Liberation Day".
As of April 9, 2025, when the measures come into force, no country will be able to do business with the US without the reciprocal tariffs taking effect.
The President said that the new taxes are necessary to eliminate the trade deficit between the US and other countries, from China to the European Union.
A previous exemption for short-term products is also being cut.
Certain products from key industries - including steel, aluminum, automobiles, copper, pharmaceuticals, semiconductors and wood - are also exempt from these tariffs. Instead, they will be tariffed at rates already determined or soon to be determined by the president.
The reciprocal tariffs are paid by American companies that import products from these countries. Economists expect these companies to pass the new tariffs on to American consumers, who could face higher costs on everything from iPhones (made in China) to coffee beans grown in Colombia.
If the tariffs are maintained by the Trump administration and if other nations impose retaliatory tariffs, both the US and other countries "will suffer serious recessions," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics
