STAE district director caught producing election cards at forbidden hours

Director distrital do STAE flagrado a produzir cartões eleitorais em horário proibido

The Director of the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) of the Chiúre district, in Cabo Delgado province, was caught producing voter registration material with four other members of the district STAE.

According to a note to which MZNews had access, the incident was carried out late at night (18:50) by the deputy head of the finance office of the Chiúre District STAE, appointed by the Democratic Party of Mozambique (MDM), in the building where the district STAE operates.

The document states that the incident followed a complaint by the MDM that the district director of the STAE had been receiving identification documents from citizens outside the jurisdiction of Chiúre from the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) party, "with the aim of producing tainted electoral cards in the dead of night".

This report led the MDM member, along with two other members of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo), to monitor the premises of the district STAE in order to verify the allegation.

The work would have resulted in the arrest at around 6.50 p.m., "a time considered illegal under the law, according to Law No. 8/2014 of March 12".

The document, signed with today's date, does not, however, indicate when the incident took place. However, it does say that a video documenting the incident was recorded. MZNwes was unable to obtain the video.
