STAE district director arrested for embezzling millions in MMV subsidies

Detido Director distrital do STAE por desvio milionário de subsídios de MMVs

Around 300 Members of the Polling Station (MMVs) rioted on Saturday in the city of Nampula, demanding subsidies for work carried out in various parts of the district as part of the October 9 general elections.

They said that, since the formation period, they haven't even received any of the promised pennies. In fact, without knowing by what criteria, some MMVs have received the subsidies and others have not.

On Friday, the District Director of the Technical Secretariat for Electoral Administration (STAE) in the city of Nampula, Evaristo Alfredo, claimed never to have seen the money to pay the MMVs.

"We did a search to understand, we didn't have any concrete information," he said.

But it is known that around 1,300,000 meticais for the payment of MMVs was embezzled. And the National Criminal Investigation Service has arrested the district director of STAE, his deputies and two technicians involved in the embezzlement.

Meanwhile, more than 400,000 meticais of the embezzled amount has already been recovered. Luís Cavalo, the provincial director of STAE, said that the payment of the MMVs would not be until Saturday.

"The money was embezzled. The people have already been located. Part of the money has already been recovered. These people were not guilty, and we have activated another mechanism to resume payment," he said.
