Natural disasters have killed ten people and affected more than 47,000 in the last two months

A report by the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD), indicates that at least 10 people have died and another 47,493 have been affected by rain, strong winds and other natural disasters in the country in the current rainy season.

"Of the total number of deaths, nine were registered in Zambezia province and 01 in Sofala, both in the center. The victims died dragged by rainwater, uncontrolled burning and lightning," indicates the INGD report quoted by Lusa.

Nevertheless, from October 1, 2020 through Thursday, natural disasters also made 39 people injured and partially and totally destroyed 4,380 homes.

The bad weather left another 5,759 homes, 45 churches, and eight hospitals flooded, and 64 power poles were destroyed, INGD reports.

The INGD report points out that the 2021/2022 rainy season also caused the destruction of a total of 987 classrooms of precarious and conventional construction, affecting 385 schools, 114,110 students and 1,998 teachers.

According to the authorities, some access roads have been interrupted as a result of flooding in the country's main basins, and a survey of the impacts and an assessment of the response needs are underway, the INGD concluded.
