The Federal Deputy and Member of the Cooperation and Development Committee of the German Parliament, Dr. Jan-Niclas Guesenhues, made an official visit to Mozambique from March 6 to 10 of this year with the main objective of deepening the relations of friendship and cooperation between Germany and Mozambique.
During his stay in Mozambique, the Federal Deputy held official meetings with His Excellency the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Mozambique, Manuel José Gonçalves, where he was informed about the political situation in the country, with particular emphasis on the situation of Cabo Delgado, characterized by the fight that the government and partners are waging against terrorism. Following this, the Federal Deputy also met with the Commander of the European Union Training Mission in Mozambique (EUTM Mozambique), Brigadier General Pires, where they exchanged views on the training process of the units of the Armed Forces of Mozambique.
Before going to Cabo Delgado Province to learn about the humanitarian and instability situation in the north of the country due to terrorist attacks, the Federal Deputy and Member of the Cooperation and Development Committee held meetings with representatives of the political parties in parliament, namely, the parliamentary benches of FRELIMO, RENAMO and MDM, as well as with different actors and representatives of civil society.
Already in the province of Cabo Delgado, the German deputy was received in working meetings by His Excellency the Secretary of State of the Province, His Excellency the Governor of the Province and also by the President of the Agency for the Integrated Development of the North (ADIN).
"These meetings allowed us to learn more about the challenges facing the province and the government's plans to address them, especially in the framework of the Cabo Delgado Reconstruction Plan," said the German MP
Germany is the second largest bilateral donor of humanitarian aid in the world. It has already channeled some 43 million Euros to UN Agencies and NGOs, with most of this amount going to Cabo Delgado. It is in this context, that he went to the district of Metunge to also learn about the activities of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), and visit the resettlement center of Nanjua.
Before ending his visit to the province, the Federal Deputy met with the Representatives of the Religious Confessions, in a meeting organized by COREM and appreciated the efforts that they have undertaken in order to give some comfort to their faithful in this difficult time.
And because part of the German humanitarian aid is destined to mitigate the consequences of natural disasters (cyclones, drought) in the country, accompanied by the Honorable Administrator of the District of Macomia and the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD), the Federal Deputy made a visit to the city where he could see up close the damage caused by climate change.
At a press conference, the Federal Deputy and Member of the German Parliament's Cooperation and Development Committee stressed the following:
"Despite the current difficult situation in Europe, we, as Members of the European Parliament, are closely analyzing the development of the conflict in Cabo Delgado. In the meetings, it became clear that the military presence in Cabo Delgado has also stabilized the situation for the time being, however, the conflict is far from over. We need humanitarian aid for the many displaced and affected people. The meetings also focused on other areas with opportunities for closer cooperation between our countries," he said.
