The outgoing Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, was elected by the majority of the 27 member states of the European Union on Thursday evening (27) to the post of President of the European Council.

António Costa won the majority of votes, as he was the only name proposed by the EU to succeed Belgian Charles Michel in the next parliamentary term.

The appointment was almost a certainty, but it was only confirmed during the leaders' meeting in Brussels.

"It is with an enormous sense of mission that I will take on the responsibility of being the next President of the European Council," António Costa reacted on his social media page X.

He will be the first Portuguese and the first Socialist to take up the post since it was created under the Lisbon Treaty in 2009.

He will take office on December 1st for a renewable term of two and a half years.
