The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, has been meeting with various sectors of society to seek solutions to end the post-election demonstrations in Mozambique. For Carige, Nyusi's deadline for presenting results is utopian.
Meanwhile, these meetings follow an initial attempt to reach a successful conclusion with the leaders of the political parties. Of the four presidential candidates invited by Nyusi, Venâncio Mondlane, supported by the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique, was absent from the meeting. The meeting did not go ahead. From then on, the meetings were with various parts of society, such as academics, businesspeople and religious people. It seems that Civil Society Organizations have still not been invited...
According to the Mayor of Beira, Albano Carige, the talks between Nyusi and some social groups have yet to produce results. He criticized these talks, given that Nyusi is less than a month into his second term.
"What keeps us quiet is that the PR has only 30 days until January 15 and he will no longer be PR. However, there are all these démarches The result of which we don't see," he said at a press conference yesterday.
For Carige, a supposed lack of continuous effort or political will for Nyusi to actually hold a "peace talk" with Venâncio Mondlane, who called for the demonstrations, is incomprehensible.
"What is the PR really doing with all these extracts, with which he has been holding meetings?" he asked, accusing him of "playing games with Mozambicans".
In Albano Carige's view, the meetings are measures that are known to be fruitless beforehand, because "he's managing his 30 days to leave the country and say he's done something".
The mayor criticized the fact that in his appearances, Nyusi shows more concern for the deaths of police officers than for civilians. He called on the PR to also show condescension towards civilians who die in demonstrations.
