Final Investment Decision for Beluluane Thermal Power Plant announced this year

The Final Investment Decision (DFI) for the start of construction of the Beluluane Thermal Power Plant, in Boane district, Maputo province, will be announced by December this year, according to Beluluane Gas Company (BGC) project coordinator Marco Morgado.

The materialization of the project was supposed to start at the end of this year, but the deadline was extended due to delays in the schedule of activities, which, however, does not affect the forecasted start of its operations in 2026.

On the other hand, the delay is due to the delay in taking over the DFI, which, like the Thermal Power Plant, should happen by the end of this year. And, for now, "we are finalizing the natural gas cement supply contracts".

This is an infrastructure with the capacity to generate two thousand megawatts (MW) of energy, at a private investment of 2.8 billion US dollars.

The power plant will be built in phases, according to the growing needs of the energy market, with the first one to start with a production capacity of 500 Megawatts.

Two million Metric Tons (MT) of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) are expected to be imported annually for consumption and power generation for the country and the region.

He added that the LNG for BGC will come from different points around the world, and must be unloaded at the port of Matola, in a floating storage and regasification unit.

From this terminal, a pipeline will be built to the new power generation plant in the Beluluane Industrial Park, through the infrastructure of MGC (a partner of Gigajoule) and distributed to the market in the Southern African region. The entire infrastructure for receiving the gas from the port and the connection to the gas pipeline network in the region will cost just over 500 million US dollars.
