Frelimo's presidential candidate, Daniel Chapo, is no longer the party's interim Secretary General, a position not provided for in the statutes.
Thus, Chapo was officially nominated and proclaimed as the party's Secretary General today at the party's school in Matola, where the session to debate the proposed electoral manifesto is taking place.
"Interim, that's what people say. What's in the statutes is Secretary General. The Political Commission appoints the Secretary General. So it's not interim, that's all I wanted to clarify," said a party member present at the session, quoted by Radio Mozambique.
Party President Filipe Nyusi then suggested: "Are you saying the word interim we can withdraw?". The question was put to the vote and it was determined that "we can go ahead".
Chapo had been appointed interim Secretary General at the session of the Frelimo Central Committee on May 13, following the resignation of Roque Silva. It was at that session that Chapo was elected the party's presidential candidate for the general elections on October 9.
