The President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, met on Sunday evening (23) with former presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane, who is leading the largest post-election demonstrations since last October in Mozambique.
According to a press release from the Presidency of the Republic, the content of the meeting has not been revealed, but the head of state, Daniel Chapo, posted a message on his WhatsApp channel, emphasizing the importance of dialogue as a priority for the country.
"Dialogue, dialogue, dialogue. Our mission, our priority. Life Mozambique," wrote Chapo, reiterating his commitment to resolving Mozambique's political and social issues.
This meeting, held in Maputo, takes place less than a month after the President of the Republic signed the Political Commitment for an Inclusive National Dialogue with nine political groupings that took part in the political dialogue sessions held so far. This commitment aims to establish principles and guidelines for an inclusive national dialogue, addressing key issues such as constitutional revision and governance.
"The meeting between the President of the Republic and Venâncio Mondlane reinforces the need to deepen reconciliation and consolidate a stable political environment, which is essential for the country's socio-economic development. Dialogue between the various political and social forces is a decisive step towards restoring confidence in the institutions and guaranteeing a harmonious future for all Mozambicans," says the note from the Presidency.
After the signing of the Commitment, the President of the Republic and the signatory parties sat down at the table to take stock, and on that occasion the Head of State considered it to be extremely positive, saying that the signing had taken place as planned, with the presence of representatives of civil society, political parties, academia, youth, women, religious and community leaders, as well as some neighboring countries and the international community.
The Head of State and the other signatories concluded that society had welcomed the signing of the agreement, above all because it was clear that the agreement does not envisage discussing people, personal interests or group interests, but rather discusses and debates the country that everyone wants as Mozambicans.
