The African National Congress (ANC) has re-elected Cyril Ramaphosa for a second term as leader of South Africa's ruling party, it was announced today.
Ramaphosa, who is also the President of the South African Republic, was elected with a difference of 579 votes, defeating former Health Minister Zweli Mkhize in the race for the party leadership.
Thus, even though he is embroiled in a corruption scandal, the conditions are in place for Ramaphosa to run again for the presidency of South Africa in 2024.
Ramaphosa is trying to hold on to the reins of the African National Congress (ANC) as the party struggles with internal divisions and dwindling support after 28 years in power.
Portraying himself as an anti-corruption champion, Ramaphosa took control of the ANC in 2017 after its head Jacob Zuma became embroiled in several corruption cases.
But Ramaphosa's clean-handed image has been damaged by allegations that he hid a huge theft of money on his farm rather than report the matter to the authorities. (RTP, VOAportugues)
