The United States of America (USA) recorded 1.35 million cases of covid-19 infection on Monday, the highest daily total for any country in the world.

Recall that the last record was the occurrence of 1.03 million cases, announced on January 3, 2022.

The highest numbers of infections are always reported on Mondays, due to the fact that many states usually do not report over the weekend. D in this regard, we see that the seven-day average for new cases has tripled in two weeks to over 700,000 new infections daily.

On the same day, so yesterday, in the US the number of patients hospitalized with covid-19 also reached an all-time high, having doubled in three weeks. There were more than 136,604 people hospitalized, surpassing the record of 132,05 set in January last year.

The omicron variant, which is at the root of this growing data, is potentially less severe than the others, yet health officials have warned that the sheer number of infections could overwhelm hospital systems.

A redesigned covid-19 vaccine that specifically targets the omicron variant is probably needed, Pfizer's CEO said Monday, adding that his company could have one ready to launch by March.
