The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) announced Friday that Canada has donated more than one million doses of covid-19 vaccine from manufacturer AstraZeneca to Mozambique as part of the Covax initiative.
The Unicef statement clarifies that this shipment of doses "complements the 12,481,620 doses already obtained by the Mozambican government, totaling 13,650,420 doses.
The UN system in Mozambique has been working with national authorities, businesses, and civil society to identify and address the needs of the population in response to the health crisis and its socioeconomic effects.
The Covax mechanism, led by the Coalition for Innovation in Epidemic Preparedness (Cepi), the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (Gavi), and the World Health Organization (WHO), working in partnership with UNICEF, provides vaccines for 20% of the population in each participating country.
On the same day, the Mozambique Red Cross donated to the Ministry of Health 30 therapeutic oxygen concentration machines and 30,000 units of FFP2 masks.
Mozambique has a cumulative total of 2,183 deaths and 224,347 covid-19 cases, of which 96% recovered from the disease.
