The African Union Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) announced today in Addis Ababa that five percent more new cases of covid-19 were reported in just one week in Africa, bringing the number to 9.8 million.
"In the week of December 27 to January 2, compared to the week of December 20 to 26, there were a total of 299,370 new cases, showing a 5% increase from the previous week," noted Center Director John Nkengasong.
According to Nkengasong, the continent now has 9,886,819 cases of infection with the disease, which represents 3.3% of the total recorded in the world.
However, the continent has 8.8 million cases given as recovered from covid-19, equivalent to 89% of covid-19 infected are recovered.
Most African countries (95%, or 52 countries) are still going through the third wave, pointed out the official, stressing that the evolution of the vaccination process will be crucial to the evolution of the disease, which has the omicron variant already circulating in 33 countries, one of which is Mozambique.
