South Korea's Constitutional Court (CC) voted unanimously today to impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol, removing him from office four months after he threw the country into political chaos following a martial law order.

With the decision, Yoon immediately loses his post. As of this date, he can no longer serve as the country's president, nor can he appeal the decision. South Korea must hold an early presidential election within 60 days.

In a forceful ruling, read out in 23 minutes by TC president Moon Hyung-bae and broadcast live to millions of South Koreans, the judges upheld the impeachment process approved by parliament on December 14.

"Yoon committed a grave betrayal of the trust of the people, who are the sovereign members of the democratic republic," said the judge.

After learning of the decision, Yoon Suk-yeol apologized to the South Korean people for "failing to live up to the beloved citizens".
