Constitutional Council breaks silence and denounces death threats against its judges

Conselho Constitucional sai do silêncio e denuncia ameaças de morte aos seus juízes

The Constitutional Council (CC) said in a statement on Monday (25) that it is not oblivious to the situation of instability and insecurity linked to the general elections on October 9, denouncing death threats against its judges, sent by private messages or posted on social media..

In the same document, the CC assures that it is working "hard" to achieve electoral truth, and anticipates that the final results will be announced by December 23.

"The CC regrets the fact that some of the demonstrations have descended into acts of vandalism and limitation of the individual freedoms of all those who did not join the demonstrations," it says in the document, despite recognizing the right to demonstrate, established by the Constitution of the Republic.

According to the bastion of legality, "the independence of the judges of the CC is reflected in the fact that they base their decisions on the Constitution and the laws, freely formulating their conviction on the basis of elements in the case file, without any pressure".

"The Constitutional Council is engaged in the process of validating the election results, reconciling minutes and notices requested from the National Electoral Commission (CNE) and minutes and notices requested and made available by some political parties [...], as well as civil society organizations - observers," the institution adds.

Further on, the CC regrets the deaths that occurred during the protests that began on October 21, and sends its condolences to the families of the victims.
