MEP Francisco Assis urged the European Commission to safeguard the integrity of politician Venâncio Mondlane and the European Parliament (EP) to condemn the atrocities of the Mozambican authorities due to the current social tension in Mozambique.

"I also call on the European Commission to take the best possible steps to safeguard the physical integrity of Venâncio Mondlane," Assis wrote on his Instagram page.

In the same message, he said that the European Parliament has an obligation to comment on what is happening in Mozambique and to condemn the attitude of the authorities, particularly the disproportionate police violence.

"What is happening in Mozambique cannot be ignored by the international community. The EP has a duty to speak out on the matter and to condemn the behavior being pursued by the Mozambican authorities," it reads.

According to the socialist, "The violent and totally disproportionate police repression represents a gross violation of the most basic human rights".

He promised to present a proposal next week for an urgent debate in the EP on this issue.
