Combating terrorism: Students develop National Communication Observatory

Combate ao terrorismo: Estudantes desenvolvem Observatório Nacional de Comunicação

The Association of Student Researchers and Innovators of Mozambique, in the province of Nampula, are developing a National Communication Observatory to combat terrorism in the province of Cabo Delgado.

The idea is to collect information on how the population of the north of the country can collaborate with the Defense and Security Forces in monitoring and reporting strange situations in the community in order to eradicate terrorism, said the Radio Mozambique (RM).

According to the association's president, Marchal Alfredo, the work is taking place in partnership with the University of Porto, and some activities are already being carried out with religious actors, with the aim of reaching out to young people.

"Youth pairs are groups of guys who, by their nature, don't do anything, they just sit around in neighborhoods. With them we can get some information about or linked to terrorism. Right now, our aim as young people is to have community surveillance. It shouldn't just be in Cabo Delgado, everywhere there is a need for community vigilance and the youth peers can report any situation," said Marchal Alfredo, quoted by the RM.

He said that the organization has already been giving talks to young people so that they refuse to be lured by strangers with promises of jobs in Cabo Delgado.
