CNE needs 3.2 billion meticais for the 2023 local elections

The National Elections Commission (CNE) needs 3.2 billion meticais for the sixth local elections to be held on October 11, 2023, throughout the country.

The data was made public this Thursday in Maputo, by the CNE spokesperson, in a round table discussion on the preparations for the next local elections.

Paulo Cuinica says that the government has already approved one billion meticais and negotiations are underway to approve the remaining amount.

Cuinica also said that the installation of provincial election commissions is underway, an action that is also being taken in the areas affected by terrorism, in Cabo Delgado and Niassa.

The Executive Director of the Institute for Multiparty Democracy, Hermenegildo Mulhovo, said there was a need to overcome the challenges that characterized the previous elections.

Meanwhile, the representatives of the parties with seats in parliament, namely Frelimo, Francisco Mucanheia, MDM, Augusto Pelembe, and Renamo, Saimone Macuiane, called for more transparency in the sixth local elections.

For the entire electoral cycle, namely the municipal elections of 2023 and the general elections of the following year, 9 billion meticais are needed.
