The city of Beira will have an urban landfill site next January. This infrastructure will mitigate the flooding that cyclically afflicts the capital city of the central.
Sketched out four years ago by the Mozambican Dredging Company (EMODRAGA) and the Municipal Council of Beira, this infrastructure will store quantities of sand dredged in the access channel to the port of that city, built below the average sea level.
According to the President of the Board of Directors of the Mozambican Dredging Company (EMODRAGA), Domingos Bié, the project includes a social part, which should consist in the allocation of sand to the population and for the coastal protection of Beira.
Continuing, Bié revealed that the project will consist of repelling sand from the access channel to the Port of Beira, specifically in the so-called Macúti curve, which has approximately 500 thousand cubic meters of annual volume, in addition to other banks in about three million.
"The ship, after filling the hold with that type of sediment, will pump it out via a specially imported pipe connection from Denmark," explained Domingos Bié.
Meanwhile, according to the officials, the project, will also ensure the safety of the vessels that sail to and dock in the Port of Beira, and will also contribute to coastal protection.
