Telephone communication between Cabo Delgado province and other parts of Mozambique has been interrupted since dawn today due to the passage of severe cyclone Chido. The province is also without electricity.
Images in our possession show various infrastructures destroyed in the city of Pemba. Streets are partially flooded. There is no drinking water. Landslides have occurred in some areas of the province. Houses of precarious construction have been destroyed. No deaths have yet been reported. The government's partner institutions are providing assistance to some of the affected areas.
The President of the National Institute for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, Luísa Meque, said today in Nampula that cyclone Chido has entered the Mozambican mainland in category 4, from the districts of Mecufi, in Cabo Delgado, and Memba, in Nampula. Until now, the biggest impact had been in Cabo Delgado, he said.
According to Meque, the data is still preliminary. "The cyclone is now making its way towards Niassa province, but it will have already weakened, but we will have a lot of rain soon afterwards." She urged the population to adopt precautionary measures.
