Chapo: Demonstrations aimed to destabilize the country and strangle the national economy

Chapo: Manifestações visavam desestabilizar o país e estrangular a economia nacional

The President of Frelimo, Daniel Chapo, said yesterday that the post-election demonstrations are aimed at destabilizing the country's economic fabric and the nation itself, and, in principle, are not aimed at the election results, as they were announced beforehand.

"It became clear during the sessions that the primary cause of these demonstrations was not to contest the election results, as they were unleashed long before the election results were announced, in a meticulous way to destabilize our country and strangle our economy," he said.

Speaking at the closing session of the party's Central Committee in the city of Matola, Chapo said that national and international public opinion on the truth of the elections in Mozambique had been manipulated.

The President of the country's largest political group lamented the loss of human lives, including civilians and members of the Defense and Security Forces, during the demonstrations.

"We have also witnessed, without precedent, the destruction of public and private assets, which cost the state and every Mozambican incalculable sacrifices to build, in an agenda aimed at strangling our economy, worsening the suffering of the Mozambican people and using these same people as an instrument for the destruction of our Frelimo," he said.
