About 3 billion people in the world cannot afford a healthy diet, says FAO

According to the report of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO, "The State of Food and Agriculture 2021", about 3 billion people in the world cannot afford a healthy diet.

If a new shock occurs, reducing the population's incomes by one third, it is possible that another 1 billion will fall into this bracket.

The FAO report, released on Tuesday, highlights the importance of preparing for unexpected, high impact events.

In addition, the cost of food could rise to 845 million people if there is a disruption in food transportation systems. The FAO recalls that even before the pandemic, the world was already struggling to meet the goals of eradicating hunger by 2030.

Another highlight is the increase, worldwide, of extreme weather events, armed conflicts, and unforeseen events, which contribute to the increase in global food prices.

The FAO stresses the urgent need to improve the capacity of this system to withstand the shocks mentioned in the report.

In the area of recommendations, FAO says that governments should make the resilience of agrifood systems a strategic part of their plans for responding to future challenges and ensure connectivity so that systems overcome unforeseen events quickly.
