Cartoon: In Mozambique, the corrupt are the same people who are supposed to fight and judge the corruption crystallized in the minds of Mozambicans

The academic, Patrício José, says that corruption is a phenomenon that has already crystallized in the minds of Mozambicans and that the fight against "decrystallization" requires a lot of effort from the leader of this process.

"The fight against corruption is a tough fight, because it's somewhat crystallized in our consciousness," he said, noting that "naturally" citizens have assumed the need to corrupt in order to access services, and vice versa.

He stressed the need to break "this vicious circle, which even begins in our thinking and ends up leading to our attitude".

"Destroying this.... Removing ourselves from the consciousness that has been crystallized for a long time requires a lot of performance from those who have to be at the forefront of the [anti-corruption] processes."

Speaking to Radio Mozambique On the occasion of the fourth year of Filipe Nyusi's second cycle of governance as President of the Republic, he noted the peculiarity that, in Mozambique, the corrupt are the same people who have to fight and judge corruption.

"I don't know if you've been following the fact that even those who have to judge corruption are also corrupt; those who have to prosecute are also corrupt. We've been following magistrates who are being dismissed, expelled from the judiciary, from the public administration, from the public prosecution service and from the judiciary," he said, questioning what had happened in society until this level was reached.

He stressed that the phenomenon of corruption affects everyone, including those who should be or remain immune to the corrupting force.

"That's a challenge. The effort is there. It's visible. And we're going to see to what extent he [Filipe Nyusi] leaves a legacy. These kinds of efforts have to continue forever, because the battle is not yet won," he said.
