Madagascar's capital, Antananarivo, is flooded due to the torrential rains that have killed about ten people and left another 12,000 homeless.
Antananarivo was built in an area of steeply sloping hills prone to disasters in case of heavy rains and cyclones, which can lead to landslides. According to the authorities there is a high possibility that in the near future the region will be affected by a cyclone coming from the Indian Ocean
The authorities, which have already declared a state of emergency, are asking people living in the lower areas of the city to leave their homes and seek refuge outside Antananarivo.
On the other hand, Madagascar is facing a severe drought and the rains have relieved farmers in the south of the island in the Indian Ocean.
Madagascar is one of the countries in the world most directly affected by the impact of climate change because it is located in an area prone to cyclones, floods, and other natural phenomena. It is the fifth largest island in the world and is located about 1,200 kilometers east of Mozambique.
According to the World Bank, Madagascar is the fourth country in the world with the highest rate of child malnutrition and 75% of the population lives below the extreme poverty line.
