South Africa eliminated Cape Verde in the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship (CAN) 2023 in Côte d'Ivoire on penalties.
After a 0-0 draw at the end of 120 minutes in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast, Bafana Bafana scored two of the penalties, while the Blue Sharks only finished one in five. South African goalkeeper Williams saved four penalties.
Cape Verde thus missed out on their first semi-final appearance, a stage to which South Africa, champions in 1996, will return 24 years later to face José Peseiro's Nigeria, who beat Angola.
