On March 30th, at 6pm, the inauguration of the MUSAMBIQUE exhibition will take place, a collective show of Portuguese artists Manuela Pimentel and João Alexandrino (aka JAS).
The exhibition results from an artistic residency that Camões organized with the two artists in May 2019, in Maputo and on Mozambique Island. Since that moment, Manuela Pimentel & JAS have been working on unpublished works inspired by Mozambique that they are now presenting in Maputo, in the renovated space of the Portuguese Cultural Center.
The exhibition "MUSAMBIQUE" has the support of the "Gallery This Is Not A White Cube" and special participation of the poet, playwright and translator, Daniel Jonas.
Manuela Pimentel was born in Porto (Portugal) in 1979. She has a degree in Plastic Arts from Escola Superior Artística do Porto [2003]. Her work is developed in different areas and artistic practices such as painting, drawing, scenography and video. She was awarded the ESAP prize for the Higher Course in Visual Arts [2004]. She was awarded the first prize for Painting Servartes - Body in Expression [2007]. Her work is represented in different public and private collections. She represented Portugal with the installation "Iberian Suit: Installation - A Journey of Imagination" at the Kennedy Center (Washington D.C., USA) [2015] and at the Biennale Internazionale d'Arte, Sant 'Antioco - (Sardinia, Italy) [2015]; She was invited by the Afro Brazil Museum in São Paulo to be part of the exhibition "Barroco Ardente e Sincrético" curated by Emanoel Araújo [2018]. She has developed several projects in partnership with other artists, highlighting interventions in Scenography for Theater and Cinema. In 2013 he founded the project C A I X A contemporary art with Visual Artist JAS, where they develop collective and individual projects. His work has also been exhibited in other countries such as Brazil [São Paulo / Rio de Janeiro], United States [Washington D.C.], Italy [Rome / Sardinia]; Mozambique [Maputo]; Spain [Madrid] among others. He exhibits individually and collectively since 2001.
The Portuguese artist João Alexandrino, also known as JAS, was born in Porto/Portugal in 1981. His work develops in different artistic fields and activities, such as installation, performance, video, painting, scenography and drawing. He was one of the founding members of Espaço INCUBADORA [2002-2007] in Vila Nova de Gaia (Portugal), where he presented permanent installations.
He is currently developing several individual projects and in coauthorship with other artists, having video and real-time drawing as predominant elements in his work. In 2013 he founded the project C A I X A contemporary art with the artist Manuela Pimentel. As part of other projects, her work has also been exhibited in other countries such as Hamburg, Rouen [France], Barcelona, Norway, São Paulo [Brazil], Maputo [Africa], among others. He has exhibited individually and collectively since 2000. He has directed several short films and experimental videos.
