MEP Carlos Zorrinho said on Monday that the European Union (EU) is ready to support "all initiatives" to "prevent" the arming of rebel groups in Cabo Delgado.
"The EU will collaborate in all initiatives that are put in place to prevent the arming of these groups," said Carlos Zorrinho, in his capacity as co-chair of the ACP-EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly.
Zorrinho was speaking at a press conference to take stock of the 42nd session of the Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP)-EU assembly, which ended in Maputo.
Carlos Zorrinho suggested the creation of a network of countries that work together to "monitor and prevent" access to weapons by groups that "end up being push factors for terrorism".
"The EU is in favor of absolute control over the destination of weapons," he said.
According to the official, there is an "increased effort" to "multiply dialogue" and create "situations closer to peace" in Cabo Delgado, a region in northern Mozambique terrorized by armed violence since 2017. (RTP)
