Cabo Delgado/Terrorism: Mozambique receives last batch of FPE equipment

Cabo Delgado/Terrorismo: Moçambique recebe o último lote de equipamentos do FPE

The European Peace Facility (EFF) Assistance Measure has supported the Mozambican Armed Forces in response to the crisis in Cabo Delgado with 85 million euros in equipment.

Through the EPF package, the EU supported Mozambican military units trained by the EU military training mission in Mozambique (EUTM Mozambique), to strengthen the capacities needed to restore security in the northern province of Cabo Delgado and protect the civilian population.

The EPF supported a total of eleven units trained by EUTM Mozambique with non-lethal equipment, such as individual equipment (ballistic helmets, vests, camouflage nets), collective equipment (field tents, generators, water reserves), means of land and amphibious mobility (vehicles, ambulances, boats), technical devices (drones) and a field hospital.

These units formed eleven Rapid Reaction Forces to fight the insurgency in Cabo Delgado.

Following the adoption of an initial urgent measure in July 2021 worth EUR 4 million, the European Union increased its support through the EPF. In November 2021, an additional package of EUR 40 million was approved to support five military units trained by EUTM Mozambique. In April 2022, EU member states increased funding again by EUR 45 million to meet the needs of all eleven units to be trained by EUTM Mozambique.

An additional EPF action in support of the Southern African Development Community Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) worth EUR 15 million complemented the EPF Assistance Measure. Following SAMIM's withdrawal from Mozambique, all the equipment was transferred to the Mozambican Armed Forces in July 2024. The action is now complete. (Press release: Europe)
