A new wave of attacks in the district of Cabo Delgado has been sowing terror in the region and has already led to a new wave of displaced people. The Defense Minister admits that the fight against terrorism is a complex and time-consuming path.
Cabo Delgado has been facing an armed insurgency for six years, with some attacks being claimed by the extremist group Islamic State. Cristóvão Chume guarantees that the troops on the ground will not allow the terrorists to retake entire districts.
"The fight against terrorism, not only in Mozambique, but in all parts of the world, is a difficult fight that needs courage, unity of effort and, above all, that there is not too much anxiety on the part of the national community to hear immediate results in its fight," explained Cristóvão Chume, quoted by the newspaper. RFI.
Chume nevertheless reassures the population that the Defence and Security Forces and their SAMIM and Rwandan allies are working to combat these groups and minimize the risk of radicalization.
"We're going to see situations like those that happened in Chiúre, Metuge and other areas," he added, stressing that "there are some attacks that we won't be able to prevent, but our mission as Defense Forces is to prevent terrorism from flourishing again, not only in Cabo Delgado province but throughout the country."
This Saturday, March 2, there were reports of attacks in Quissanga and this Sunday, March 3, news of the occupation by terrorists of the headquarters of the Ibo Island Administrative Post. However, so far there has been no official confirmation.
The new wave of attacks in Cabo Delgado has already led 67,321 people to flee their homelands.
