Cabo Delgado: Two TA officials arrested on charges of embezzling 2 million meticais

Cabo Delgado: Detidos dois funcionários do TA acusados de terem desviado 2 milhões de meticais

The authorities in Cabo Delgado province, in northern Mozambique, have arrested two senior officials from the Provincial Administrative Court (TA), accused of stealing two million meticais from the court's coffers.

According to the Cabo Delgado provincial prosecutor, Amilton Minete, quoted by the newspaper "Mediafax"The two men arrested are the head of the provincial finance department and the head of the statistics and internal control department.

"The thefts took place between April and November 2024, through bank transfers from the court's account to two accounts in the names of officials and an account belonging to a private company owned by one of the accused," Minete explained, noting that if the two are found guilty of embezzlement, they could be sentenced to between eight and 12 years in prison.

On March 14, arrest warrants were issued for the two men, but they both fled. They were only apprehended after five days of absence, both from their homes and their places of work.

Minete believes that there was a leak, in which someone warned the two men that they were going to be arrested. His office was now trying to trace the source of the leak.
