Preliminary data indicates that the rains in the coastal district of Mecúfi, in Cabo Delgado province, have left more than 9,000 people under siege and flooded production fields as a result of the Megarruma river overflowing.
The floods have affected residents of the towns of Natuco, Napuilimite and Moge, with an undetermined number of people still displaced in the district of Chiúre.
The Administrator of Mecúfi, Dinis Mitande, said that it was difficult to provide families with basic necessities because it was impossible to travel along the road that connects the town to the affected region.
"The whole area is flooded. The road that connects Sandene to the town of Natuco is not passable. All the communities in that area depend on that stretch. It's very important because it also gives access to the area of the villages at the Mazeze post", he said, quoted by the Radio Mozambique.
According to the official, it's difficult to support those affected, even though the population is sacrificing to make the stretch. "But you can't carry more than 50 kilos on your head on foot."
Within the administration, there is still uncertainty about the end of the martyrdom, since the authorities in the north of the country have issued warnings about continuing rainfall and the possibility of flooding.
"We are very worried. How are our people going to manage, with heavy rainfall and the possibility of the Megarruma River overflowing again?" he asked.
