Cabo Delgado: Macomia health center back in operation after five months of closure

Cabo Delgado: Centro de saúde de Macomia volta a funcionar após cinco meses de encerramento

The health unit in the headquarters of the Macomia district, located in the center of Cabo Delgado province in northern Mozambique, is back in operation after five months of closure caused by the terrorist attacks.

This reopening brings relief to the local population because, according to a publication on the portal Zumbo FM NewsSince the terrorist attack on May 10 this year, the district has been devoid of health services.

"This milestone represents a new chapter for residents, especially for pregnant women, who were forced to give birth in precarious and dangerous conditions in their own homes," the same publication reported, quoting a source who explained that "the absence of a proper maternity ward was an unbearable burden".

Another source revealed that without a hospital, pregnant women were abandoned to their fate, since even with the mobile brigades, assistance was limited and unable to meet the needs of the population.

However, despite the reopening, the same publication notes that the return of nurses to Macomia is still slow due to the ongoing terrorist attacks.

The province of Cabo Delgado has been affected by a conflict since October 2017 that has terrorized the population and caused more than 4,000 deaths, according to data from The Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project.
